"Mental health and psychosocial support should not only be an integral part of our disaster preparedness and emergency response, but they should also be at the core of our long-term development plans," Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan said at the opening of the World Psychiatric Association's regional conference.

Experienced professionals from 19 different countries gathered in Yerevan for the conference.

Concerning the earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988, the Minister emphasised the experience of specialists who arrived in Armenia at the time, new technologies, new medicines, and new systemic approaches, all of which had a significant impact on our country's healthcare system, particularly on the further development of psychiatric health.

Let us recall that, at the request of the Ministry of Health, a "Mental Health" coalition of over 40 organisations was formed, and a memorandum of cooperation was signed among its members. The coalition's goal is to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and post-war mental health issues, as well as to integrate mental health services into primary care.
