In a significant boost to West Bengal’s healthcare sector, the Centre has reportedly sanctioned close to ₹3,000 crore for a comprehensive revamp of the state’s medical infrastructure, while the rollout of Ayushman Bharat health cards is expected to commence from July. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during a recent public gathering.
The development marks a major step toward integrating West Bengal with the Centre’s flagship health insurance programme, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme is expected to extend healthcare benefits to millions of residents across the state, improving access to affordable treatment and cashless hospitalisation services.
Sources indicate that preparatory work and beneficiary enrolment processes are already underway. Eligible residents are likely to begin receiving Ayushman Bharat cards from July onward, enabling them to avail treatment at empanelled government and private hospitals across India.
The proposed healthcare revamp is expected to focus on strengthening medical infrastructure, modernising public health facilities, and expanding healthcare delivery systems across urban and rural regions. The funding allocation is also likely to support capacity building, medical equipment upgrades, and improved patient care services.
Industry experts and healthcare providers have welcomed the move, calling it a crucial step toward expanding healthcare access in eastern India. Several private hospitals are reportedly preparing for increased participation under the Ayushman Bharat network, anticipating a broader patient base once the programme is fully operational in the state.
The Centre has also encouraged faster implementation of key public health initiatives, including disease prevention programmes and vaccination drives, alongside the integration of PM-JAY. The combined efforts are expected to significantly strengthen West Bengal’s healthcare ecosystem in the coming months.
