Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that every individual aged above 70 years would be covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh.
Speaking at the unveiling of the BJP's manifesto in Delhi, the Prime Minister highlighted the financial burden faced by the elderly, particularly the middle class, in accessing healthcare. "The primary concern for senior citizens, particularly those from the middle class, is the affordability of healthcare. To address this, the BJP pledges to include every individual above 70 years in the Ayushman Bharat Yojana," Modi stated.
Additionally, PM Modi revealed plans to extend the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme to the transgender community. "The BJP is committed to extending the Ayushman Bharat scheme to cover the transgender community," he affirmed. Presently, over 34 crore citizens benefit from the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides free health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh.
Launched by former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during the FY19 Union Budget announcement, the scheme aims to shift from a segmented to a comprehensive healthcare approach. Under Ayushman Bharat, beneficiaries receive coverage for various healthcare services, including pre-hospitalization and post-hospitalization expenses, diagnostic services, and medicines.
The scheme also covers pre-existing medical conditions from the outset and offers portable benefits across India.
In addition to healthcare for senior citizens and the transgender community, the BJP manifesto focuses on women's health.
PM Modi pledged to launch a special campaign against cervical cancer if the party secures a third term. The manifesto also underscores the importance of addressing breast cancer, osteoporosis, and other health issues affecting Indian women.
