Medtronic, responding to market dynamics, has strategically opted to exit the ventilator market and restructure its respiratory and patient monitoring divisions. This decision reflects the company's commitment to optimizing its product portfolio in line with evolving industry trends, as stated by GlobalData.

Medtronic's ventilator offerings, such as the Puritan Bennett 980 and Puritan Bennett 840, cater primarily to critically ill patients in high-acuity environments, showcasing high performance.

The move to depart from the ventilator market and merge the remaining Patient Monitoring and Respiratory Interventions (PMRI) businesses into a new entity called Acute Care and Monitoring stems from multiple factors. These include declining profitability within the segment, exacerbated by slowed growth over the past year and certain manufacturing-related recalls deemed detrimental to profitability.

Elia Garcia, Medical Analyst at GlobalData, notes, "The demand for emergency ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic led to an influx of new players in the market, driven by the urgent need for versatile designs. While the ventilator market naturally gravitates towards lower acuity models, the broader trends in Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) indicate a future surge in products with integrated system designs."

"By reallocating resources to areas with higher growth potential, Medtronic demonstrates confidence in its ability to lead in this newly integrated business. The company's continued investment in AI applications to develop intricate integrated systems further underscores this commitment," Garcia concludes.
