External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday to discuss India's collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), particularly in the areas of traditional medicine and public health initiatives.
The meeting comes as part of Jaishankar’s three-nation tour, which also included visits to Germany and Saudi Arabia. “Delighted to see @DrTedros, DG of World Health Organisation this afternoon. Discussed our cooperation in WHO including on traditional medicine and public health,” Jaishankar shared on X, along with photographs of the meeting.
India-WHO Cooperation in Health and Medicine
The discussions between Jaishankar and Ghebreyesus highlighted India’s ongoing support for WHO’s public health efforts, particularly in promoting traditional medicine.
India has been an active proponent of integrating traditional healthcare practices, such as Ayurveda, into global health strategies. The meeting reinforced India's commitment to advancing public health and wellness on a global scale through this partnership.
Human Rights and Global Shifts in Focus
During his visit, Jaishankar also met with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. The two discussed India’s views on the global human rights situation.
“Shared India’s perspectives on how human rights challenges are best addressed,” Jaishankar said in another post on X, emphasizing India’s stance on addressing global human rights issues through constructive dialogue and cooperation.
Addressing Global Security at Geneva Think-Tank
In addition to these meetings, Jaishankar engaged with the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, where he shared insights on the significant global changes currently shaping international relations. He expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Jean-David Levitte and Ambassador Thomas Greminger for hosting him, saying,
“Pleased to share perspectives on global tectonic shifts at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.” Jaishankar's visit to Geneva marks the conclusion of his diplomatic tour, during which he addressed key international issues ranging from health cooperation to human rights and global security.
