In a significant step toward integrating traditional medicine with modern research, scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Ayurveda researchers are joining hands to explore herbal treatments for liver ailments.

Speaking at a national seminar titled “Hepatobiliary Wellness through Ayurveda: Bridging Traditional Wisdom with Contemporary Science” held in Bhubaneswar, Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), said, “We are deliberating on the use of Ayurveda to treat liver-related ailments, and identifying gaps for future research.” He added that efforts are underway to include traditional healers—whose practices have largely remained undocumented—in this scientific dialogue, allowing their knowledge to be validated through clinical studies.

At the event, Sarada Ota, Assistant Director at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bhubaneswar, emphasized the rigorous process ahead: “We will collect medicines used by traditional healers, standardize them, and conduct toxicity tests before moving to clinical trials. We see real potential in integrating these Ayurvedic formulations with modern medicine for better patient outcomes.”

Prakash Kumar Sahoo, a scientist from ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar, noted that the institute has been collaborating with AYUSH-oriented organizations on initiatives such as healthy ageing, and this joint effort aims to “bridge traditional and modern medicine for better treatment of liver disorders.”

Renowned gastroenterologist Subrat Kumar Acharya also addressed the seminar, presenting insights on diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strategies for hepatitis and other liver diseases. Several researchers presented papers on different aspects of liver disease management and prevention.
