According to Niko Arzumanyan, head of the neurosurgical service, one of the new directions being mastered in the Arabkir medical complex is surgical treatment of epilepsy with simultaneous neuromonitoring. Previously, such operations were carried out with the assistance of foreign partners, but the doctors of "Arabkir" hospital now work independently in the operating room.
According to studies, the cause of epileptic seizures in a child for several years was a rather large brain tumor, during the removal of which motor nerve fibres were bypassed with the help of neuromonitoring in order not to damage the child's motor functions. The surgery took about 10 hours as the tumour was large in size and solid.
A few months later, the operated child will be subjected to EEG monitoring to assess the operation's effectiveness. He will continue to take medications for several years, after which doctors believe he will be free of epilepsy and able to live a normal life.
